Coming soon to a state near you?

A few months back, I commented on Samuel Alito going on to the Supreme Court, and advised women, somewhat tongue in cheek, to say goodbye to their uteruses as the government now controls them.

In El Salvador, which has some of the strictest anti-abortion regulations in the world, the government literally takes control of a woman's uterus if she is suspected of having had an illegal abortion.

There was a fascinating article in the Times magazine this week about what goes on in that country. Back-alley abortions are the only way for women to end a pregnancy, and women and doctors convicted of having or providing abortions are jailed for years. If a woman visits a doctor or hospital and is suspected of having had a back-alley abortion - they frequently go wrong and result in medical complications - then the authorities get involved:

“As they do in any investigation, the police collect evidence by interviewing everyone who knows the accused and by seizing her medical records. But they must also visit the scene of the crime, which, following the logic of the law, often means the woman's vagina.

"Yes, we sometimes call doctors from the Forensic Institute to do a pelvic exam," Tópez said, referring to the nation's main forensic lab, "and we ask them to document lacerations or any evidence such as cuts or a perforated uterus." In other words, if the suspicions of the patient's doctor are not conclusive enough, then in that initial 72-hour period, a forensic doctor can legally conduct a separate search of the crime scene. Tópez said, however, that vaginal searches can take place only with "a judge's permission." Tópez frequently turned the pages of a thick law book she kept at hand. "The prosecutor can order a medical exam on a woman, because that's within the prosecutor's authority," she said.

In the event that the woman's illegal abortion went badly and the doctors have to perform a hysterectomy, then the uterus is sent to the Forensic Institute, where the government's doctors analyze it and retain custody of her uterus as evidence against her.”

Just contemplate that. The government literally retains custody of the uterus as evidence.

And the GOP and the Christian right just had an orgasm thinking about that. Not that they actually have orgasams. Those are dirty.

Unbelievable. If that ever starts to happen here, I am moving to Canda or England.

Holy sh--! Those poor women there. I'm scared now that that's the direction we are going. Everyone who voted for those abortion laws in South Dakota should read that article and think very carefully about where we are going as a nation.

The arrogance of the people in power there and HERE, and the churches controlling them, is disgusting.

So let me see if I understand. You not only want abortion on demand in our own country, but now you want to tell other nations what laws they should enact and what sense of maorality they should follow. The previous commneter said something stupid about the arrogance of the people in power and the churches. Try looking in your own mirrors all you baby killers who want to impose your warped beliefs on other nations now, and ask youself about arrogance.

One of the saddest parts of that article is when the reporter interviews a woman who had an abortion and she talks about how she cried every day when she found out she was pregnant, and had nowhere to turn, and the father didnt want anything to do with her or a baby. Scared and powerless and crying, but the antichoice side makes it seem like women just casually get abortions without anguish or fear.

To Bally 107, it's pretty bizarre to see your comment about how the pro-choice side wants to "impose" our views and morality on other nations. The entire rationale of your side of this topic is imposing your morality on others.

I bet Bush and the Supreme Court are studying how things work in El Salvador so they can start putting those laws into effect here. The people who want to ban abortion rights better start asking themselves are they ready to start locking up women or doctors? That's the logical conclusion to making abortions illegal. I just don't think Americans are ready to see some poor woman or a doctor thrown behind bars. At least I hope they aren't.

lwt - I dont think so either, at least not in every state. But there are states where they would do that, which is why banning abortion affects poor women mostly, since they cant easily travel to another state to get a legal abortion.

Sorry Miss jane but preventing killing is not imposing morality on others, it's what we do every day. if not then why do we have murder laws or any type of laws thou shall not steal, etc. Thats imposing morality on others. Are you seriously suggesting we do away with laws against murder or theft? Thats moronic.

And sorry lwt, but I think Americans are ready to imprison women or doctors involved in baby killing. There is no point in having a law unless it can be enforced. Murder is murder and anyone commiting it or participating in it should be locked up whether you are killing a baby 2 months before it is born or two months after it is born.

What a grusome story. I can't get an image of some government office in El Salvador filled with confiscated uteruses out of my mind now:(

haha if the rightwingers would actually have orgasams more maybe they wouldnt be so fixated on sex or anything related to it as much as they are.

bally 107 said...

"Anonymous" that is typical of your type and of JBK that everything, even a tragic subject like the murder of millions of unborn babies every year becomes an excuse for a cheap sex joke. And peanut, if you want a grusome thought stuck in your head just visit any abortion clinic in America and see all the discarded babies thrown out like trash. Thats an image I cant get out of my head.

bally 107 - if you and your religious soul mates werent so opposed to sex - including birth control - lots of these unwanted pregnancies wouldnt occur. You are such a hypocrite!

falv said...

Peanut dont try arguing with religious fanatcs. They don't respond to reason, they are sure they are right and everyone else is wrong and evil. You can't speak with them like a rational person, because it doesn't work.

bally 107 said...

Im sorry all you bleeding hearts, but I believe most thinking people would say the pro-death side is the "fanatic" side, not mine.

I'm sorry too bally107 that you are so filled with hate that you insult people instead of having an exchange of ideas with them...

Peanut, that's all she has ever offered. Note that she said, "You not only want abortion on demand in our own country, but now you want to tell other nations what laws they should enact and what sense of maorality they should follow."

What she is failing to realize is that the Bush administration has witheld family-planning funding to other countries because they don't do it the way Bush wants them to do it. He won't even allow condoms to be given to countries that are rampaged by AIDS, because he thinks the "fix" is to teach them abstinence. Yeah, try telling a husband and wife to never have sex anymore.

Who are these people? See, she doesn't even see the blatant hypocrisy in her own narrow minded views. It blows my mind how off the wall her remarks are. It'd almost be hilarious if it weren't so sad.
